- Mobile Portal
A customized version of the
MyUM portal will be offered. Through this
version, for example, students can obtain Testudo information of their
class schedules (and, in conjunction with MyeVyu, the best path to get
from one class to another) and grade reports.
Public information available through the mobile portal will include
University news, dining hall menus, weather reports, Hoff Theater showings
and many other valuable resources.
- ELMS
Accessed through the Portal, the mobile ELMS will provide students
the ability to check assignments, respond to teachers and classmates and complete
other online activities related to their classwork.
- Classroom Clickers
The software used by the
Clickers tool is being ported to run
as a web application on the iPod Touch and iPhone. This will enable these
units to substitute for purchasing the Clicker units themselves while
providing the functionality to respond to classroom questions that are
multiple choice, short answer and more.
- MyeVyu
Developed by a team led by Dr. Ashok Agrawala of the MIND Lab of the University of
Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies
(UMIACS), this is a port of the
location and public safety application his team originally created on the
Nokia smartphone platform. It offers a full campus building database. As a location tool, it provides your current
location and directions to another spot on campus. In addition, it offers the schedules for both the
ShuttleUM and tells you where in transit they are and when the next one
will appear at your location. It also provides scheduling information
for MetroBus.
The public safety features will include a "panic button" that,
with one touch, sends a notice for aid directly to a police dispatcher
along with location information. We also hope to be able to provide the police
with video and audio streams from the iPhone.
- Access to the umd-secure Wireless Network
The umd-secure wireless network is part of the campus wireless access system. It provides encrypted and speedy connectivity across much of campus. Information on the network can be obtained here.
The Mobility Initiative and OIT's Networking and Telecommunications division have developed a configuration file which provide the proper settings needed to allow the iPod touch and iPhone to connect over umd-secure. In order to use the settings, they must be installed via an email attachment. The file and a pdf of instructions can be automatically sent to your umd.edu address. To get delivery of the files, visit http://mobility.umd.edu/emails/, enter your address (only umd.edu addresses accepted) and click the "Send Me E-Mail Please" button.
